Learning to Fall

Rah and I read Ecclesiastes yesterday morning on a whim, and I was soon reminded at how much I admire this book. This verse had me thinking:

“I again saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift and the battle is not to the warriors, and neither is bread to the wise nor wealth to the discerning nor favor to men of ability; for time and chance overtake them all.”

The great can fail, and the weak can succeed; the excellent can be exceptional, and the menial can be mediocre. As a result, it’s often our expectations that get us down, because we start to believe that skills and gifts are absolute determinants of our anticipated achievements.

“For time and change overtake them all…” How silly we are to forget the power of reliance on God’s grace.
